Grilled Romaine Lettuce

I first started making this a year or two ago when we would get an abundance of romaine lettuce in our CSA box.  I was skeptical about grilling lettuce, but OH MY.  I can consume an entire small head of romaine in a sitting when prepared this way.

You want to use small heads of romaine, or remove the outer leaves of a big head of lettuce.  Based on this recipe.

  • 2 small heads of romaine lettuce, cut in half lengthwise and cleaned the best you can
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp granulated onion
  • 1/2 tsp granulated garlic
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

Mix up all ingredients except lettuce in a measuring cup.  Place the four halves in a gallon sized ziploc bag.  Pour the marinade into the bag, seal and shake up, making sure it really gets inside the lettuce.  Preheat grill to medium.

Grill about 2 minutes each side.  Serve immediately.
