Roti/Chapati aka YUMMY Indian Bread

Nothing goes better with Indian food than some yummy Indian bread!  I don’t have a clay oven, but in the absence of this one, this simple bread is the next best thing.  Don’t use a fork and eat your food with the bread instead.  So good!

This week I served this with Veggie Korma.

  • 2 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • water
  • optional: olive oil for brushing

Combine the flour and salt in a bowl.  Slowly add water and stir with a spoon, switching to (floured/oiled) hands once necessary.  Continue adding water until you have a nice dough consistency – soft and pliable, but not sticky.

Divide the dough into 10 – 12 golf ball shaped balls.  Cover until rolling so they don’t dry out.

Sprinkle a bit of flour on your rolling surface and rolling pin.  Roll each ball into a small tortilla sized circle.

Heat a griddle on medium heat (no oil needed).  Place one or two rolled out circles on the griddle, flipping after a minute or two or until it starts to brown.  Cook the other side a bit more until it’s slightly browned.  Remove from griddle and brush with olive oil, if you wish.  Serve immediately.  If saving some for later, reheat in an oven until warm.
